I have a Kenmore sewing machine and the bobbin timing is off, so it won't catch...How do I fix this? I used some thick thread, and the machine jammed up. I had to force the needle up to pull the fabric out. After that, the bobbin wouldn't pull through with any thread. Thick thread will jam in the long groove of the needle and cause loops on the bottom of the fabric that look like you've got too light top tension. Now to fix your problem: it's probably not the timing. It's probably a bent needle from the jam or cruddlies in the mechanism. Dig out the manual and disassemble the machine as you would for cleaning, and dig out all the crufties. Oil per the manual's recommendation. Put in a nice, new needle of the right size and type for the fabric and thread combination (thread should only fill about 40% of the width of the eye of the needle). To use heavy thread, you need huge needles. Make sure the needle is in the right way around -- backwards needles won't pick up bobbin thread. Test with standard dressmaker thread and a size 80/12 needle -- if you can get that to pick up the thread, your problem is not timing. If you still can't get it to stitch, and you're convinced the problem is timing, compare the stitch cycle of your machine to what you see here: http://sewusa.com/Sewing_Machine_Repair/Sewing Machine Hook Timing.htm Generally speaking, timing is not a good DIY project unless you're very patient or have someone who knows what they're doing to help you. Oh, and make sure the sewing hook isn't broken. In my younger years, I managed to create a jam bad enough to actually fracture the hook. Sigh.
