In sewing, do you press seams open before or after finishing the edges? If I'm following a pattern with a 5/8" seam allowance, and I sew a straight stitch seam along the allowance, should I press this seam and then overcast the edges together or should I sew the seam, overcast the edges of the seam together and then press the seam? Also, if using a 5/8 inch seam allowance, is it prefereable to press the seam open on both sides or press to one side? Or should I cut the seam down to a 1/4: before overcasting? I'm making children's clothing for my two girls. (And, no, I don't own a serger, but I do have a pretty decent sewing machine). Been there, done that, lots! Here's what I do. I straight-sew the seam with a 5/8" seam allowance. Then I trim the seam to 1/4". Then I overcast the edges of the seam together with a zig-zag stitch (you have to experiment with the right length and width before you begin that). Then I trim the stray threads on the overcast edge of the seam. Then I press the seam to one side. Then I proceed with the rest of the sewing. Good luck with your project!

Basic Sewing Tools

For a successful and professional looking sewing project, the right set of tools is essential. Without them, you'll have a hard time finishing your project with ease. Good quality tools are also important, especially for the sewing task.

So what are the essential tools you need to finish your sewing project? Would a needle, thread and a pair of scissors suffice? Though you can make do with these tools, the right set will entail more than that.

Before you start any project, you need to make sure you have the tools you can use. Whether it's as simples as repairing some tears from your child's clothing or making a pillow case, you need tools, tools and tools.

When it comes to sewing, you have two options. You can either hand sew it or you can use a sewing machine. Though using a sewing machine is the easier method, there are projects that really need to be sewn, like for gowns with beads. You need to really sew the beads to the fabric yourself.

There are also those that have a magnetic center so that you can easily pick up pins that are accidentally dropped. There are also those that are featured as wristbands so that you can just wear the pins while sewing.

- Seam gauge or buttonhole

These two basically perform the same functionalities. They are used for placing button holes or seams. They are also used for spacing pleats, for measuring hems and for making tucks.

- Seam ripper

These are small hook-shaped knives. They are very important in every sewing kit or basket. They are use for removing stitches. All you need to do is to slide the seam ripen through the stitches and you can already remove the stitching completely.
