I have a sewing machine singer model #AL068408, I don't have the instructions. Help please!?

Singer sewing machine model # AL068408, I don't have the instructions. Tied www.si.si.edu/digital collections, don't know what model # to use. I can't find the model # to match. I really want to see if this machine works. It would be fun to sew just as my family did back in the day.

That's actually the serial number of your machine. According to Singer's website, it was manufactured in Elizabeth, NJ (that's what the AL tells you) in 1952 and is a model 201

You can get a manual from Singer:

http://www.singerco.com/accessories/manuals.html

or from these folks, who also have threading instructions online:

http://www.sewusa.com/Threading_Diagrams/Threading_Pages/Singer_Sewing_Machine_Threading/singer_201_threading_diagram.htm

How to figure out which 201 you have: http://f1.grp.yahoofs.com/v1/AKL3RzygXi9KmRqhFb21ig4_jQe31Z32
(my guess is you've got a 201-2)

Don't forget to give her a good oiling with sewing machine oil or Tri-flo (not 3 in 1) before attempting to use her. The nice folks at the yahoo group "wefixit" can help you get her going again! http://groups.yahoo.com/group/wefixit/ They may also have parts and manuals available.
